DIRECT ACCESS INFORMATION SUPPORT SYSTEM
Improving the interaction between operators and quality systems
Project leader: Ger van den Kerkhof
To increase the quality awareness and motivation of operators at assembly lines and thus improve the quality of the final product, it is interesting to enable them already in the assembly process to enter and retrieve data in and from quality systems. Then, specialised quality personnel often enters these data after the completion of the entire assembly process.

Goals
The purpose of this project is to improve the quality of the final product by improving the interaction between operators at assembly lines and quality information systems. With this project, we want to increase the quality level (expressed in First Time Through) by 1%.
Methodology
We offer to operators at assembly lines access to quality information systems through a company-specific electronic application. Volvo Cars opts for pda’s per work station, Bombardier and CNH make use of tablet computers, whereas Tower Automotive works with the existing user interface of their machine.
Phases
- Establishing the project scope and defining types of information
- Building expertise on the exchange of information in two directions
- Research into user interfaces
- Preparing and executing research case studies
Results
- Improvement of the “First Time Through” by > 2%
- Reduction of red tape in the organisation
- Increase of quality awareness among operators
- Knowledge of and experience in bidirectional and real-time information exchange between operators at production lines and background systems
Project Duration
01/01/2008 - 01/04/2010
